Ronaldo Confirms Exit from Portugal Camp After Manager's Broken Promises

Cristiano Ronaldo has laid bare the events leading to his abrupt departure from the Portuguese national team camp, issuing a lengthy statement directly addressing his issues with national team manager Roberto Martínez.

The superstar forward was famously an unused substitute during a recent match, which led to him leaving the squad. In his statement, Ronaldo explained that while he doesn't regret his actions entirely, he acknowledges his reaction was inappropriate and deserves punishment.

Ronaldo detailed a series of conversations with the coach, starting from an initial meeting where Martínez reportedly assured him of a key role in his plans, including playing specific matches. The coach allegedly proposed Ronaldo not travel for two away games to manage his fitness, a plan Ronaldo initially refused but which was later seemingly agreed upon.

However, the situation escalated when, on the day of the Norway match, Ronaldo was unexpectedly asked if he was fit to play 30 minutes. He agreed, but was never brought onto the field, a decision he views as a direct breach of the coach's word. This, coupled with a subsequent press conference where Ronaldo felt Martínez was aggressive and did not follow through on promises made in private, prompted his decision to leave.

Ronaldo also apologized to his teammates and the Portuguese fans for leaving the camp, taking full responsibility for his actions. He stated that he felt his continued presence would harm the team after the trust was broken. While acknowledging that his actions warrant a punishment from the Portuguese Football Federation, he emphasized his unwavering commitment to competing for Portugal as long as he is physically capable.

The legendary striker, who holds numerous scoring records for Portugal, did not rule out future appearances, stating his desire to compete is paramount. However, with Ronaldo approaching his 42nd birthday, the statement leaves his international future, and the manner of his potential farewell, uncertain.
