FIFA Referee Choice Sparks Controversy Before England vs. Argentina Semifinal

The highly anticipated World Cup semifinal clash between England and Argentina is already mired in controversy, with FIFA's selection of referee Ismail Elfath drawing sharp criticism and fueling accusations of potential favoritism.

As England aims for their first final since 1966 and Argentina seeks back-to-back titles, every call in the Atlanta semifinal is expected to face intense scrutiny. Argentina's journey to this stage has already been marked by complaints regarding VAR and refereeing decisions, making the appointment of Elfath particularly sensitive.

Concerns intensified after the Daily Mail reported that Elfath, a Moroccan-born American, has officiated several matches involving Lionel Messi, including the 2023 Leagues Cup final for Inter Miami. He also served as the fourth official during Argentina's 2022 World Cup final victory over France.

While media outlets have dubbed him Messi's "favourite referee," FIFA has pushed back against allegations of bias. Refereeing chief Pierluigi Collina has defended the independence of World Cup officials, stating that questioning their integrity without evidence is unacceptable. Former FIFA referee Christina Unkel also noted that reviewed incidents did not clearly indicate poor officiating, despite opponent complaints.

Despite FIFA's assurances, the appointment has created palpable nervousness. Given the previous controversies surrounding Argentina's matches, even a marginal call by Elfath could trigger significant backlash, highlighting the delicate balance FIFA must strike in maintaining perceived impartiality.
