Manchester United is reportedly on the verge of securing a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, signaling a significant midfield shake-up as the club prepares for a major rebuild.
Following a change in leadership, the Red Devils are actively strengthening their squad early in the summer transfer window. The 26-year-old Brazilian has emerged as United's top target to anchor the midfield, especially with Casemiro having departed at the end of the 2025/26 season.
According to reports, United's recruitment team, led by Jason Wilcox, has moved swiftly to outmaneuver Atletico Madrid. They've presented Ederson with a lucrative contract proposal worth approximately €4.5 million per year. Despite Atalanta's initial high valuation, Ederson entering the final year of his contract has paved the way for a deal estimated to be around £38 million.
Ederson, a Europa League winner, has spent four seasons honing his skills in Serie A. Personal terms are not anticipated to be a stumbling block as he looks set to make the move to the Premier League. The aggressive pursuit of Ederson highlights the need for a robust presence at the base of United's midfield, especially with Casemiro's exit.
With Casemiro gone and a potential sale of Manuel Ugarte also on the cards, manager Michael Carrick is keen to infuse his starting lineup with energy and press resistance ahead of a return to the UEFA Champions League. Kobbie Mainoo is expected to be a central figure in the revamped midfield.
Ederson is unlikely to be the only midfield addition this summer, as United aims to sign at least two new midfielders. The club is also keeping tabs on Brighton's Carlos Baleba and West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, with Sandro Tonali, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Elliot Anderson also linked to Old Trafford.
